Report

Brilliant Tournament - well done and thanks to the organisers.
A great time was had by all. Frances and Gerry were dissapointed that they could not sit and watch the A Division final as they like to do at most tournaments - but they were busy playing in it!
Unfortunately they were narrowly defeated (5 goals to 4), by "The young and the Old" (Andy Heynes, Beth Peaker and Anna Robertson). From my perspective I am not convinced Andy deserves the title old", but he didn't complain.
The competition was run as a Turnabout, and it worked brilliantly providing good competitive play between the strong players and the weaker players at the same time. The A grade players clearly dominated but there was plenty for the rest of us to do.
On Saturday, Westcountry A were only able to draw 5-5 with "Wayne's Ladies" (Clara, Imogen and Wayne) but won over Pendle Wild Tigers (Debbie Harris, Margaret Bradley and Sue Thompson) by a clear enough margin to ensure their first place in that group.
Also on Saturday, Westcountry B lost to "The Young and the Old" but managed to beat Pendle Wild Lions (Tel Banham with Dave and Shelley King) to come second in their group. Even when Agi played number 1 against Shelley's Number 3, she managed to find 3 goals and missed another 2 goals. I think Shelley was just a little suprised at the performance of that little demon.
On Sunday, they faced up to "Wayne's Ladies", but this time they substitited George with Marius, (a friend dof Zeitse's ). This was definitely a good move (Sorry George!). After a slow start, Westcountry pulled back to a 5 all draw and had to play for a Golden Goal. After some discussion of who should line up where - should they stay in the same positions or revert to those of the first chukka, they compromised and Marius lined up at Number 1 beside Wayne. The Line Up ball went straight into his net and the game was ours in very few seconds!
There was also a "B" Division competition - sorry I don't have the names or the results, but they included some Pennine juniors and the new "Mr Men" team from Portsmouth. We'll see more of them next year and they may join us for training in the spring.
On Saturday a large group of Pony Club newcomers came for training and then on Sunday they played a tournament. There were quite a few adults around watching the game for the first time so hopefully the UKPA will pick up a few more members.
After prize giving, I told Andy that Westcountry might have lost its first A Division Final, but we'd be back!
I think another season in B to consolidate our position and skills, then Westcountry will be fielding a regular A Division side.
Watch this space!

Kent Target Report

Dominic, Frankie, Agi and Rachael all gave really superb performances in the squad trials. Many of the matches were a joy to watch. Whether they get selected or not is now up to the selectors. If they don't, then they at least know that they did their best. They all have a few more years in their respective age groups to get into the teams in years to come.
In the Friends & Family B Division, George, Vicky and Simon came first.
The C and D divisions were combined so that each team had a C Section and a D Section. As it worked out, Daniel, Frances and Gerry were placed in C and our D section was Mike, Rosie and Jane Ventworth from Essex. We won both the divisions! Whether you scored it as teams or sections we all won and came first. Well Done all
So from a club perspective we took all the right prizes over 3 divisions! Not at all bad. We are definitely the club to watch.
As for the Saturday evening; well it was unbelievable. The Hilliers who hosted the tournament had a marquee left from a family wedding last weekend, which was impressive in itself, but then the "ladies of Kent Target" put on a sit down meal to beat anything seen in Polocrosse in my experience. That was followed by entertainment by Jason and Caroline Burbidge and co. All in all, it rivalled the UKPA Presentation Ball! No other club has ever matched that.

Nationals Results

Well it didn't go well for all of us, but it certainly went very well for the Primary Juniors. They were seeded to win and that is just what they did, and in style. The seeding meant that they did not meet arch rivals Croome until a very thrilling final on Sunday afternoon. Despite the very best efforts of Croome (Charlotte, Jenny and Amy) who had won Pool B, Agi, Dominic and Frankie came out clearly on top. They were nervous at the start and not overly confident that they would win through, but when it mattered they won every chukka amd came out winners by 10 goals to 4. Dominic's new horse certainly proved its worth. We look forward to seeing more of him next season.
Agi was awarded Best No 1, and Dominic Best No 2. Frankie did not get Best No 3 which went to Beth Peaker of the Pennine team. On reflection we think that except in the final, Frankie and Dominic probably never allowed an opposing No 1 anywhere near the area and so Frankie never demonstrated typcial No 3 skills to the umpires - hence no award!
Agi's pony, Star was awarded Best Pony and a super rug. I think this might be here fourth Best Pony award this season. Watch out Miss Muffet!
The D section of Rosie, Frances and Mike were teamed up with Pendle Wildcats and had a good weekend, which was sadly flawed by some errors on the score sheet in their play off for 3rd and 4th place against Kent Target. Kent were awarded the 3rd place and the tournament is over now and we will not be appealing. However, the players are resonably sure that the result was probably a draw. Next time!
The C Team did very well. We did not win like last year, but then many of those players were now in the B Team. Instead, Daniel, Gerry, Claire, Catherine, Charlotte and Rob came 3rd. A very creditable result considering the opposition: Liscombe Park fielding Vikki Borland and Richard Chapple, Essex fielding Matt Still and Matt Fookes and Silver Ley fielding Shauna Waterer. I could certainly have used some less outstanding opponents for my C Division debut.
The B Team, George, Vicky, Zeitse, Jim, Jonathan, and Rachael were fairly well beaten throughout the weekend, but I hope enjoyed themselves. Clearly we must think carefully about the teams we put in next year as other clubs clearly put very strong teams in to the Nationals with many players, playing down a division. Unfortunately, my team selections left Sandra out, for which we were all very sorry. Unfortunately we had 16 players available and could not find the 2 players we needed to make up our full complement, but Sandra did get a couple of games with Liscombe Park.

Essex Results

I did not attend this tournament so I got these results from George.
The Primary Junior Division was full of very new newcomers so Frankie and Dominic played in the E Division and came 2nd. Well Done. Dominic tried out a new horse and liked it so much he bought it! Well Done again! In the C Division, Charlotte and Robert joined with Vicky Howes, won the plate competion. Brilliant! I am told they narrowly lost the first match and could even had won the cup had they gotten used to each other in time!
The B team brought Jonathan back into the fold and Borrowed Dean Howes. I don't have a result for them - sorry!

Midland Results

This was a really successful tournament for the club.
Someone pointed out to me just as we were loading up to come home, that every single member came away with a rosette. Counting the 3 players we borrowed that is 21 players. Pretty impressive in my book!
The Primary Juniors came 1st, with Agi and Frankie getting Best Player Awards - I don't know why Dominic lost out. They collected the biggest shield I have ever seen!
The D sections came 2nd and 3rd, with Mike, Rosie and Sandra, beating Frances, Gerry and Laura Scott, who was riding Mathew's young horse who did not always want to play!
The C Team (Catherine, Charlotte, Robert Nicholls, Daniel, Diane (one of the American tourists and Rachael, came 2nd. Rachael was riding Rebel in C Division and this made a slot in the B team available to Claire Morrisey.
The B Team came 3rd in the plate (George, Vicki, Zeitse, Vicki Borland , Jim and Claire).

The Inter Regional Tournament Results

The South eventually managed to put in two full teams and took Agi along as well. Agi ended up playing with a team of very novice Primary Juniors so she did not feature in the prizes this week. The Handicap Challenge Team, (George, Grant Hayes, Wayne, Daniel, Gerry , Frances) team won the tournament! Competition wasn't very keen becuase other regions had not entered high point sections. George's horse Bucket was awarded best pony. The South's Open team (Andy, Zeitse, Jason, Penny, Noleen and Vicki) played brilliantly and came 3rd. To her relief Vicki showed she can play at that level.

Pegasus Croome Pony Club Tournament

Only Daniel and Agi were able to go along with Laura Scott to represent the VWH Pony Club at a very enjoyable low key Pony Club tournament. Laura had alot of trouble on a very green horse, but enjoyed herself and contributed more than she expected. Daniel, Laura and Catherine Yates came 3rd. Agi, Stefan and Amy were unplaced but all played extremely well and showed off their best skills.

Arden Tournament Results

Primary Juniors: (Agi, Fiona Morris and Frankie) were very dissapointed that there was no prize for the Primary Junior Division. I think the performance of our team was so good the organisers actually thought that they were Juniors! So we took the prize for second place in the Junior Competition. They almost came first losing by one goal to Celyn (and they like to argue about that one!) They beat all the other Junior teams!Agi again won Best No 1, & Star Best Pony.
B Team were 3rd (I Think)! Claire Morrissey awarded best No 3 - Not bad for a 1st tournament! Ruth Simkin joined in our team.
C Section came 4th in the cup competition (8 teams altogether).
D Division: 3rd out of 6. E Division 5th. Although there was an E Division for the first time there were problems where some teams appeared to be C or D teams. There were Juniors in D that dominated that division. There has since been some discussion of the grading structure and there may be some revisions.

Liscombe Park Tournament Results

Primary Juniors: 1st in Primary Junior Division. Agi : Best No 1, Amy Best No 2, Frankie Best No 3 - Agi & Star Best Pony - That's a result! They also played and almost beat some Junior teams!
B Section (teamed with Liscombe Park) second in the B Division! That is also a result to be incredibly proud of!
C Section Well played but not placed.
D Division: 2 sections placed 3rd and 4th in the Cup which means they both won their first round matches to get into the cup. Well Done all!
